Individual Tax Return Meeting Checklist
What should I bring to my meeting with Finnegan Partners?
The documents required for each meeting varies depending on the complexities of your income tax affairs. Generally, you should consider bringing the following to your meeting (where applicable):-
- Your PAYG Payment Summary (Also known as your "Group Certificate") issued by your employer
- Other Employment related payment summaries (including ETP's)
- Details of any investment income (where applicable):-
- Bank Statements for Interest received on all bank accounts for the year
- Dividend Statements for all share dividends received
- Managed Funds Annual Tax Statements
- Employee Share Scheme Statements
- Details of any Government Benefits or Payments
- Details of any Superannuation Pensions or Lump Sums
- Rental Property Information, including:-
- Annual Rental Property Statement from Real Estate Agent
- Loan Statements showing interest paid for the year
- Tax Depreciation Report (Prepared by Quantity Surveyor)
- Council Rates
- Land Tax
- Insurance Premiums Paid
- Body Corporate Fees and Charges
- Water Rates
- Details of any repairs and maintenance or new appliances/equipment
- Any other income details including sole trading business income and expenses
The following outlines many common types of deductible expenses claimed by individual taxpayers:-
- Motor vehicle running costs (applicable if using the log book method). Includes, registration, petrol, insurance and servicing costs
- Books, trade journals and newspaper subscriptions
- Study costs relating directly to your current job
- Briefcases/luggage or suitcases
- Calculators, electronic organisers
- Electronic tablets, computers and software
- Details of Mobile Phone usage - you may be able to claim a proportion for work use
- Details of Home Internet usage - you may be able to claim a proportion for work use
- Home Office - an indicative number of hours you work at home per week/month
- Stationery and office supplies
- Tools of trade
- Work related clothing expenses (including clothing purchases and laundry)
- Union fees
- Subscriptions to trade, professional or business associations
- Details of any seminars and conferences (including travel costs)
- Gifts or donations
- Previous year accountants fees (if not prepared by Finnegan Partners)
- income protection insurance (excluding death and total/permanent disability).
- Details of any assets sold that were either used for income earning purposes or which may be caught by capital gains tax (CGT). For example the sale of shares or a rental property
- Superannuation contributions by sole traders or substantially unsupported taxpayers
- A copy of your Private Health Insurance Statement for the year (if applicable)
- If you are a new client please bring a copy of your last years income tax return if you have a copy
